मल्लिनाथ भगवान का परिचय
श्रीनाग पर्वत पर विराजमान श्रीनाग मुनिराज के पास जाकर धर्मामृत का पान करके जैनेश्वरी दीक्षा ग्रहण कर लेता है। अनेक प्रकार से तपश्चरण करते हुए ग्यारह अंगों का अध्ययन किया। सोलहकारण भावनाओं के चिन्तवन से तीर्थंकर प्रकृति का बन्ध कर लिया। अन्त में संन्यास विधि से प्राण विसर्जन करके अनुत्तर विमान में अहमिन्द्र पद को प्राप्त कर लिया। वहाँ पर एक हाथ का ऊँचा शरीर था और तेंतीस सागर प्रमाण आयु थी।
गर्भ और जन्म
इसी भरतक्षेत्र के बंगदेश में मिथिला नगरी के स्वामी इक्ष्वाकुवंशी काश्यपगोत्रीय ‘कुम्भ' नाम के महाराज धर्मनीतिपूर्वक राज्य संचालन कर रहे थे। उनकी रानी का नाम ‘प्रजावती' था। अहमिन्द्र की आयु छह मास की अवशिष्ट रहने पर ही इन्द्र की आज्ञा से कुबेर ने माता के आँगन में रत्नवर्षा प्रारम्भ कर दी थी। चैत्र शुक्ला प्रतिपदा के दिन सोलहस्वप्नविलोकनपूर्वक रानी प्रजावती ने अहमिन्द्र देव को गर्भ में धारण किया और मगशिर सुदी एकादशी के दिन अश्विनी नक्षत्र में पूर्ण चन्द्र सदृश पुत्ररत्न को जन्म दिया। सौधर्म इन्द्र ने समस्त देवों सहित महावैभव के साथ सुमेरू पर्वत पर तीर्थंकर बालक का जन्माभिषेक किया। अनन्तर ‘मल्लिनाथ' नामकरण करके मिथिला नगरी में जाकर महामहोत्सवपूर्वक माता-पिता को सौंप दिया।
तप
अरहनाथ तीर्थंकर के बाद एक हजार करोड़ वर्ष बीत जाने पर भगवान मल्लिनाथ हुए हैं। उनकी आयु भी इसी में शामिल थी। पचपन हजार वर्ष की उनकी आयु थी एवं पच्चीस धनुष ऊँचा सुवर्ण वर्णमय शरीर था। कुमार काल के सौ वर्ष बीत जाने पर एक दिन भगवान मल्लिनाथ ने देखा कि समस्त नगर हमारे विवाह के लिए सजाया गया है। सर्वत्र मनोहर वाद्य बज रहे हैं। उसे देखते ही उन्हें पूर्व जन्म के सुन्दर अपराजित विमान का स्मरण आ गया। वे विचार करने लगे कि कहाँ तो वीतरागता से उत्पन्न हुआ प्रेम और उससे प्रकट हुई महिमा और कहाँ सज्जनों को लज्जा उत्पन्न करने वाला यह विवाह! उसी समय लौकांतिक देवों ने आकर भगवान की स्तुति की। अनन्तर सौधर्म आदि इन्द्रों ने देवों सहित आकर ‘जयन्त' नामक पालकी पर भगवान को विराजमान किया और श्वेतवन के उद्यान में पहुँचे। वहांँ पर भगवान ने मगसिर सुदी एकादशी के दिन अश्विनी नक्षत्र में सायंकाल के समय सिद्ध साक्षीपूर्वक बेला का नियम लेकर तीन सौ राजाओं के साथ संयम धारण कर लिया एवं अन्तर्मुहूर्त में ही मन:पर्ययज्ञान को प्राप्त कर लिया। तीसरे दिन पारणा के लिये आये, तब मिथिलानगरी के नंदिषेण राजा ने आहारदान देकर पंचाश्चर्य प्राप्त कर लिये।
केवलज्ञान और मोक्ष
छद्मस्थ अवस्था के छह दिन व्यतीत हो जाने पर भगवान ने बेला का नियम लेकर उसी श्वेतवन में अशोक वृक्ष के नीचे ध्यान लगाया। पौष वदी दूज के दिन अश्विनी नक्षत्र में प्रात:काल चार घातिया कर्मों का नाश करके भगवान केवलज्ञानी हो गये। उनके समवसरण में विशाख आदि को लेकर अट्ठाईस गणधर थे। चालीस हजार महामुनिराज, बन्धुसेना आदि पचपन हजार आर्यिकाएँ, एक लाख श्रावक और तीन लाख श्राविकाएँ थीं। भगवान ने बहुत काल तक आर्यखंड में विहार किया।
एक मास की आयु के अवशेष रह जाने पर वे भगवान सम्मेदाचल पर पहुँचे। वहाँ पाँच हजार मुनियों के साथ योग निरोध किया और फाल्गुन शुक्ला पंचमी के दिन भरणी नक्षत्र में संध्या के समय लोक के अग्रभाग पर विराजमान हो गये। उसी समय देवों ने आकर भगवान का निर्वाण कल्याणक महोत्सव मनाया।
In his previous incarnation Lord Kunthunath's soul was King Simhavaha of Khadgi town in Mahavideh area. He was a powerful and illustrious king. He had a bend for spiritual practices and after handling over the responsibilities of the kingdom to his son, he took diksha from Samvaracharya and did deep spiritual practices. As a result of his vigorous penance and devotion for the Arhant, he earned Tirthankar-nam-and-gotra. Completing his age he reincarnated in the Sarvarthasiddha dimension of gods.
From the dimension of gods he descended into the womb of queen Shri Devi, wife of king Shursen of Hastinapur. At the dawn of the ninth day of Shravan Krishna, queen saw the auspicious fourteen (sixteen according to the digamabar jain beliefs) dreams. This indicated that the coming soul would be a conqueror – a chakravarti king. And these dreams also indicated that he would be a Tirthankar. On the 14th day of the Vaishakh Krishna month of the Hindu calendar, queen Shridevi gave birth to a son.
During her pregnancy the queen saw a heap of gemstones known as Kunthu in her dreams. This inspired the king to name him Kunthu Kumar.
The pious deeds of earlier birth resulted in unlimited power and grandeur for Kunthu Kumar. After Shursen became an ascetic, Kunthu Kumar ascended the throne. Soon the disc weapon "Chakra" appeared in his armory and he proceeded to conquer the world with his mighty army. Without any confrontation all the kings accepted his sovereignty and Kunthunath became a Chakravarti. There was no blood shed anywhere and after conquering almost entire world, Kunthunath returned Hastinapur. After returning to his kingdom, he announced 12 years of the victory celebrations. He excused all the taxes taken from the people and took care that no body is in trouble in his reign. Many mighty kings and princes used to be present in his court all the time.
One day King Kunthunath was sitting in his deep thoughts when he realized that someone is sending him the message that he should now leave the vicious circle and move towards the path of Moksha. After a long and peaceful reign of twenty three thousand seven hundred and fifty years he became an ascetic along with one thousand kings immediately after Diksha he acquired Manahparyav Jnan. He spent sixteen years as an ordinary ascetic. Indulging in penances and other spiritual practices.
Omniscience and Nirvana
He attained omniscience on the third day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra under a Tilak tree in Sahasramara jungle outside Hastinapur. His first discourse was on the subject of "inner purity".
As an omniscient ascetic Kunthunath wandered around and preached true religion for a very long period. He then went to Sammed shikharji and observed a month long fast before breathing his last. His followers were deeply devoted to him. As such, a large crowd was present at the moment of his Nirvana and cremation ceremony. They witnessed the ceremony with heavy hearts and tear filled eyes. The mortal remains of Bhagavan Kunthunath were taken away by the gods for worship.
